This policy provides guidelines on the reasonable use of force. While there is no way to specify the exact amount or type of reasonable force to be applied in any situation, every member of this department is expected to use these guidelines to make such decisions in a professional, impartial, and reasonable manner (Executive Law § 840).

he Southold Town Police Department takes pride in the service we provide our community and strives to ensure that every interaction that we have with members of the public is a positive one. If you have had the opportunity to personally interact with a member of our department, and wish to convey your experience to us, please use the following forms to do so.   

Compliment/Complaint Form - English

All complaints and compliments will be courteously accepted by any department member and promptly given to an appropriate supervisor for review. Although written “complaints” are preferred, a “complaint” may also be filed orally, either in person or by telephone. Upon receipt of a Complaint form, a thorough investigation will be conducted into the complaint and reviewed by the Chief of Police. The Chief will then notify the complainant of the department’s findings and resolution. The Department will accept and address all complaints of misconduct in accordance with its department’s policies and applicable federal, state, and local laws; and municipal and county rules. It is also the policy of this department to ensure that the community can report misconduct without concern for reprisal or retaliation.

Formulario de Felicitación/Queja - Español

Todas las quejas y cumplidos serán cortésmente aceptados por cualquier miembro del departamento y entregados de inmediato a un supervisor apropiado para su revisión. Aunque se prefieren las "quejas" por escrito, también se puede presentar una "queja" oralmente, ya sea en persona o por teléfono. Una vez recibido un formulario de queja, se llevará a cabo una investigación exhaustiva de la queja y será revisada por el Jefe de Policía. A continuación, el Jefe notificará al demandante las conclusiones y la resolución del departamento. El Departamento aceptará y abordará todas las quejas de mala conducta de acuerdo con las políticas de su departamento y las leyes federales, estatales y locales aplicables; y las normas municipales y de condado. También es política de este departamento garantizar que la comunidad pueda denunciar la mala conducta sin preocuparse por represalias o represalias.
