The Town of Southold’s Youth Bureau, Mattituck High School’s Community Service Club, under the advisement of Lori Rosato, as well as the SADD club led by Andrea Nydegger sponsored a community event to honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s Day of Service. This is a day that is designed to teach and encourage students to honor the idea of service to our country and community.
In honor of this day of service, the community was asked to help support our service men and women overseas who volunteer their lives for our freedom. Through the assistance with Brookhaven Veteran’s Association, items were collected for Adopt-A-Platoon. Students gathered in Mrs. Rosato’s classroom after school, and with much enthusiasm, categorized the donations brought in by families in our community, and then filled each large box with snacks, toiletries, games, magazines, warm socks, hand warmers, and other comforts from home.
The items will help support these men and women who are support troops. Due to the drawdown, our soldiers do not have access to full base facilities. Basic hygiene supplies and comfort items are hard to come by; these care packages assembled will be greatly appreciated!
We want to thank our community for their support in this important project and in helping to teach our students about the importance of service.
